Abstract
Growth and flowering responses of five Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A. DC., cultivars as influenced by sowing time, temperature, supplemental lighting, and photoperiod were investigated. ¢¥Sentimental Blue¢¥ flowered in less than 149 days at 17/15C, day/night. Flowering of ¢¥Sentimental Blue¢¥ was earliest as compared to ¢¥Hime Murasaki¢¥, ¢¥Midget White¢¥, ¢¥Midget Blue¢¥, and ¢¥Hakone Blue¢¥. As forcing temperature was increased from 17/15 to 25/23C, flowering of ¢¥Sentimental Blue¢¥ was accelerated and the number of shoots, leaves, and flowers was increased. Plant height of ¢¥Sentimental Blue¢¥ was the shortest and ranged from 10 §¯ to 14 §¯. Flowering was mainly controlled by temperature, with an optimum temperature of 21/19C. Supplemental lighting and a long-day photoperiod did not affect flowering. The number of shoots and flowers was, however, increased. ¢¥Sentimental Blue¢¥ is considered an ideal cultivar for potted plant production. Plants can be forced in 140 days from seed sowing.
